    This paper gives account of a project involving Year Abroad students of French at Warwick University challenged to select realia from their host countries in order to stimulate enthusiasm for language learning in local schools. It considers the cognitive and affective processes informing the ‘culture gathering’ that took place: how did the responsibility to act as the interface between a foreign culture and their own inform these students’ own intercultural and linguistic journeys? Assessing outcomes, the paper goes on to describe the implementation of a more ambitious second stage project involving the Routes into Languages Adopt a Class scheme, Warwick PGCE MFL students and staff, and students on the British Council assistantship and Erasmus programmes

    The Failure of “She: An Evaluation of Solutions to Gendered Language

    This thesis looks at the prevalence of gendered language in modern day English in North America. Drawing upon different analyses of masculine pronouns and slang, this paper argues that modern solutions to gendered language fail to come to terms with the contextual elements of language. While acknowledging that gendered language is a significant problem, the author argues that the solutions thus far presented, specifically replacing the generic pronoun “he” with “she,” cannot combat the way language reflects societal masculinization. Using Wittgenstein to criticize a Heidegger’s notion of language, this paper argues that societal change is a prerequisite to the success of linguistic substitutions for gendered language

    Indonesia has so many ethnic groups whose languages are different from each other. There are some big ethnic groups; Javanese, Sundanese, and etc. Here, in this case, the writer only focuses on one of Indonesia’s ethnics and languages that is Javanese. Javanese language is divided into old, middle, new and modern Javanese language. The modern Javanese language is now used by most of Javanese. There are three main dialects in the modern Javanese language; Central, Eastern, and Western Javanese. They have their own accent and dialect that differs one Javanese language from one another. Each employs its own vocabulary and grammatical rules. There are three Javanese language styles; Ngoko, Madya, and Krama. Those three different styles that Javanese uses show that in Javanese there are levels of politeness. The politeness itself is being one of a sacral thing that must be kept by every Javanese. Nowadays, Javanese language becomes endangered language, in which at risk of falling out of use as its speakers die out or shift to speaking another language. Most of Javanese speak in Indonesian as their national language. If they keep speaking Indonesian in their daily communication, Javanese language will be an extinct language. The government should have policy to protect Javanese language from being extinct by including Javanese language in school curriculum, providing government law to force the Javanese to keep speaking Javanese language

    This scoping study investigated the impact of internationalisation strategies on modern language provision in Scottish further and higher education and was commissioned by the Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies. It follows on from the report by Footitt (2005), which explored issues of internationalisation and modern languages in England. The present investigation had the following aims: to identify the main policy documents related to internationalisation strategies and modern languages in Scottish further and higher education and explore to which extent internationalisation initiatives support or encourage the development of students' language and to explore the explicit and implicit messages given by institutional websites about international student support and about modern language study; to explore the views of selected stakeholders in Scottish further and higher education with regard to internationalisation strategies and in what ways international activities at selected institutions offer opportunities for language learning

    A model-based approach to language integration

    The interactions of several languages within a soft- ware system pose a number of problems. There is several anecdotal and empirical evidence supporting such concerns. This paper presents a solution to achieve proper language integration in the context of language workbenches and with limited effort. A simple example is presented to show how cross- language constraints can be addressed and the quality of the support attainable, which covers error-checking and refactoring. A research agenda is then presented, to support future work in the area of language integration, taking advantage of modern language workbenches features

    In this paper, we gave an idea of translation by means of knowledge graph theory from ancient Chinese to modern Chinese, by using an example story. Actually, we give the details of the method of translation from ancient Chinese to modern Chinese step by step as carried out by hand. From the example, we found that knowledge graphs have a strong ability to represent sentences. And we also found that there are things that should be discussed if we want to translate automatically from one kind of language to another kind of language by using knowledge graph theory
